Winning story by Jean Baugh, Old Glory
A couple of years ago, I was pasteurizing some milk on top of the stove and
turned up the electric burner to high to shorten the time. I then thought
I would go out to the mail box and mail some letters but on the way back to
the house, I heard a kid crying in great distress. I ran out to see what
the problem was and found three kids with their heads stuck through one
cattle panel opening, that was around a bale of hay. After I got them
unstuck, I saw a Boer cross doe in hard labor and ran to help her. She had
a pretty hard time of it but we made it just fine and I watched to make sure
the kids nursed, after dipping their navels. I then wandered around,
counting heads and making sure all was well. I must have been gone nearly
an hour, not once remembering the milk. When I got close to the house, I
heard the smoke alarm screaming and ran for the house. I opened the door to
find thick blackish smoke that choked you to breathe it. The gallon of milk
had boiled over, then dry and then burned. It had a horrible acrid smell to
it. I snatched the now lopsided and blackened pan off the red hot burner
and turned off the stove. I ran for the parrot to see if he was still alive
and rushed him and his cage outside. Then, back into the house to open all
the windows, doors and turned on the fans. The smoke smell got into all the
furniture, curtains and rugs. My insurance company paid to have everything
cleaned professionally but later I found my diamond rings were missing.
Their value was about $5,000.00 and never recovered. I had no insurance for
them. Now, that was a disaster!
